It's also breast cancer awareness, which holds a special place in my heart because my nana died of breast cancer 8 years ago. I can't remember a whole lot about it but what I do remember I hold very close to my heart. She had always lived in Louisiana while we lived in North Carolina. We would go down once a year for Christmas. She was the one who actually taught me how to wrap gifts. We did this while my granddad had taken the rest of the family cat fishing. I can always remember how everyone loved her mince meat pies, at the time I never liked them but I bet if I were to try them today, i definitely would. I need to get that recipe. Nana was originally from Harrogate England. She never had too much of an accent because she had lived here for so long but every now and then you could really hear it. The woman loved to play cards. I can always remember her trying to teach us different one. My Nana is also the one who started my favorite charm bracelet for me, which is my favorite piece of jewelry. She also loved her some hot tea. I miss her.
I never found out she had cancer until my 8th grade year. She had it for a total of 5 years before she ever told anyone she had it. We think its because she see what a struggle her sister had with it and she just didn't want to go through the chemo and all the effects of it. My great aunt Linda had it three different times. I only had the chance to meet her once when she came to North Carolina, she still lived in England and I can remember us all going to the Biltmore house in Asheville. I hate that Nana had to go through that battle by herself. Momma only knew the last week she was alive and flew down to be with her that last week. Nana was cremated and several years later we all went to D.C. where she was interred in Arlington Cemetery, Granddad is a veteran.

Breast Self-exams
Because of a very special women in my life who lost her fight to cancer, I feel that self breast exams are one of the most important things a woman can do to help with early detection. When breast cancer is detected early, the 5-year survival rate is over 95%. Self exams are easy and quick, something you can do every morning in the shower before work. These couple of minutes could save your life. If you click on my title above this section it will take you directly to the Breast Cancer Awareness' site for how to give self-exams!
In remembrance of Letitia Ann Turner Lee & Linda Elizabeth Patricia Turner Barker. Y'all are missed & loved!
